Exchange Donations Instead of Gifts this Holiday Season!

This year, instead of exchanging gifts, exchange donations!

A donation exchange is perfect for the season of giving and frees up so much time to relax over the holidays!

The donation exchange provides an opportunity for you, your friends and your family to learn about causes that are important to each of you. You will feel good knowing that your donation has helped make a difference in the lives of those most important to you as well as the lives of those who need it most.

The concept of the donation exchange is simple; phone or send an e-mail to your friends and family asking what causes that they’d like you donate to, and include a list of your chosen causes they can donate to in return.

Here are some ideas to keep in mind when hosting a donation exchange:

-State clearly that the donation exchange is in place of traditional gift giving. Ask them politely not to buy you gifts.

-If you support many causes, limit the choices you offer to three. Include a short blurb about each cause along with links to websites. Make it easy for participants to learn about your causes; the exchange is also an educational opportunity!

-Let participants know how you want them to give. If you want them to give directly to your causes, then include links to donation pages or mailing addresses. If you’d like to deliver the donations yourself, then ask them to mail the donations to you.

-If someone in your exchange needs ideas for causes, then direct them to the Canadian Registered Charities listing at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/ebci/haip/srch/basicsearchresult-eng.action?s=registered&k=&p=1&b=true.

Enjoy a relaxing holiday season knowing your gifts have truly made a difference! Start you donation exchange today!

“It takes 72 muscles to speak. So get a workout.”

The charity concert event ‘72’, named after the number of muscles it takes to speak, took place in Markham this past Saturday to support Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Inspired by their friend Christina Massad, who was diagnosed with limb girdle muscular dystrophy, Monika Dal and Saadia Sediqzadah put together a night full of entertainment to raise funds and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. The evening included live performances by various local R&B singers, rappers and bands.

Christina had originally approached Muscular Dystrophy Canada two years ago to start a Walk for Muscular Dystrophy in York Region. In a mere two months, Christina with the help of her friends, family and Muscular Dystrophy Canada, was able to raise $11,000 in the Walk’s inaugural year. This year, the York Region Walk for Muscular Dystrophy Planning Committee was able to raise another $12,000.

Christina’s hard work and dedication to fundraising and raising awareness of neuromuscular disorders in her community spurred Monika and Saadia to do their part. They single handedly secured a venue, five truly talented musical acts and even a sound and lighting company that all donated their services free of charge. A silent auction was also held at the event of which all of the items were donated.

The event was an overwhelming success with over 160 people in attendance. Monika, Saadia and Christina well exceeded their goal and raised over $2,000 for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Monika is “still in awe of the performances” and is thankful to everyone who came out to the show. A special thank you to the performers, Victor Byenkya, Monika Dalmacio and 3C, Denese Frans, David Kupferschmidt, The Muso Project, Showtime Sound for providing the sound and lighting and Southside Bistro & Bar for donating the venue. Congratulations to Monika, Saadia and Christina for putting together an amazing event!

What Is Muscular Dystrophy?

Muscular Dystrophy is the name for a group of neuromuscular disorders that are characterized by progressive weakness and wasting of the voluntary muscles that control body movement. Over time, persons with neuromuscular disorders may lose the ability to walk, speak, and ultimately breathe. For some individuals, the disorder is fatal.

There are over 100 neuromuscular disorders under the umbrella of Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Many neuromuscular disorders are inherited, but can also occur in families with no history of a neuromuscular disorder. Anyone, at any age can be affected and there is currently no cure.

Don't take your muscles for granted.
