“It takes 72 muscles to speak. So get a workout.”
The charity concert event ‘72’, named after the number of muscles it takes to speak, took place in Markham this past Saturday to support Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Inspired by their friend Christina Massad, who was diagnosed with limb girdle muscular dystrophy, Monika Dal and Saadia Sediqzadah put together a night full of entertainment to raise funds and awareness for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. The evening included live performances by various local R&B singers, rappers and bands.
Christina had originally approached Muscular Dystrophy Canada two years ago to start a Walk for Muscular Dystrophy in York Region. In a mere two months, Christina with the help of her friends, family and Muscular Dystrophy Canada, was able to raise $11,000 in the Walk’s inaugural year. This year, the York Region Walk for Muscular Dystrophy Planning Committee was able to raise another $12,000.
Christina’s hard work and dedication to fundraising and raising awareness of neuromuscular disorders in her community spurred Monika and Saadia to do their part. They single handedly secured a venue, five truly talented musical acts and even a sound and lighting company that all donated their services free of charge. A silent auction was also held at the event of which all of the items were donated.
The event was an overwhelming success with over 160 people in attendance. Monika, Saadia and Christina well exceeded their goal and raised over $2,000 for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Monika is “still in awe of the performances” and is thankful to everyone who came out to the show. A special thank you to the performers, Victor Byenkya, Monika Dalmacio and 3C, Denese Frans, David Kupferschmidt, The Muso Project, Showtime Sound for providing the sound and lighting and Southside Bistro & Bar for donating the venue. Congratulations to Monika, Saadia and Christina for putting together an amazing event!
